MIKE FLOOD with an Olympic footprint

Hosting a prestigious event as the Olympic Games requires huge preparations and investments in infrastructure and sports facilities. Many considerations have to be taken into account. For the Municipality of Beijing one of these has been flood protection. DHI China has conducted an urban flooding study of an area that covers many of the new facilities made for the Olympic Games 2008. MIKE FLOOD was used to analyse the present storm water collection system, including different underground constructions, which have been built to accommodate the transportation and commercial requirements in this area. Measures such as operation of pump stations and rainfall utilisation facilities were tested for a number of scenarios. The capability of MIKE FLOOD to include all these aspects makes it a unique and ideal tool for optimising complex urban drainage and water collection systems.

Modelling the Okavango river and delta ^

To evaluate the effect of climate change on the Okavango Delta, which carries the status as a Ramsar site owing to its remarkable biodiversity,  an integrated hydrologic model of the delta has been established using MIKE SHE, with integrated layers representing the atmospheric waters, surface waters (channels and swamps) and groundwaters (unsaturated and saturated) – read full article here

Renewable energy centre selects MIKE technology ^

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has decided to use DHI’s MIKE modelling technologies for studying water levels, currents and waves in the often rather harsh environment at EMEC’s test sites in the Orkney Islands northwest of Scotland, UK.

EMEC is a test centre created to promote the development of the wave and tidal stream energy conversion industries. The established open sea grid-connected test facility allows a ‘plug and play’ approach for testing of new wave and tidal energy devices in full scale.  Read full article here

Modelling tips and hints ^
Service Pack 2 ^

MIKE users, who do not use the DHI Software Updater, should notice that Release 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) was released on 16 May 2008. The SP2 includes fixes to inconveniences and errors, minor modifications and features to the MIKE by DHI products. An example is the changes introduced in MIKE 21, which improve the performance of the stationary solver for the spectral wave model 21 SW, especially in cases with wave-current interaction and additions to the Particle Tracking (PT) output.

The Service Pack 2 is available from:

http://www.dhigroup.com/Software/Download/Release2008ServicePacks.aspx

The release notes for the various products are updated with the information on the corrections made in Service Pack 1 and 2. We recommend all MIKE users to update their Release 2008 version.  If you have questions, please contact Customer Care by mail software@dhigroup.com

MIKE 21/3 PT (particle tracking) output ^

MIKE 21/3 PT (particle tracking) output

After the release of the MIKE 21/3 PT model, a number of clients requested output facilities similar to the ones available in the MIKE 21/3 PA/SA model.

In SP2 it is now possible to plot more detailed information about the fate of the material:

  • Concentration in a grid more detailed than available from the flow field (kg/m3)
  • Concentration of material in suspension only (kg/m3)
  • Concentration of settled material only (kg/m2)
  • Concentration of material for a given z-range (kg/m3)

Please see additional information on the FAQ web site

MIKE URBAN - Geodatabase format options ^

MIKE URBAN supports three different database formats for the model geodatabase:

  1. File Geodatabase - Stored as folders in a file system. Each data set is held as a file which can scale up to 1 TB in size. This option provides better performance than using the personal geodatabase. The model database will be distributed over many different files within the project folder.
  2. Personal Geodatabase - All data sets are stored in a Microsoft Access data file, which is limited in size to 2 GB. The main advantage of this option is the easy access to work with the model database from within Microsoft Access, such as various data editing, filtering and data validation, reporting and similar.
  3. ArcSDE Geodatabase - Stored in a relational database using Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, or IBM Informix. These multiuser geodatabases require the use of ArcSDE and can be unlimited in size and numbers of users. This option is designed for administrating large model sets with multiuser access and it is not recommended for standard modelling.

What the Users says ^
^

"I am mailing to provide a feedback in regards to MIKE11 Software usage.

  1. Support:  I have used couple of softwares and I must be sincere DHI support team is awesome, and one of the best if not the best. They respond to your technical difficulties timely and above all they go as far as taking your model setup and checking to see where the setup went wrong.
  2. MIKE11 as a Tool:  MIKE11 is a great hydrodynamic tool though I am still getting use to it. It has shown to be a tool that handles stability issues well for complex geometries for non steady cases, and the Compatibility with ArcView makes Floodplain mapping relatively easy, I would like to see a way of creating geometries a bit easier (not manually) if one is not working in the GIS interface.
  3. DHI Management: Communicating with various section of management in regards to upgrades, billing etc has been stress free.

Overall I would like to give DHI – MIKE11 an A grade in terms of Hydrodynamic modeling.”

Akinbola George, Government of Manitoba, Manitoba Water Stewardship

“I have been using the MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 model for my research and training graduate students. Currently, I am holding 3 licensees. I tested the MIKE SHE model using longterm data from small forested watershed across the Southeastern US. The model performed rather well, resulting in one dissertation (Dr. Jianbiao Lu), and a few papers in peer-review. I also brought the model to China for testing in a very different environment, semi-arid Loess Plateau region of Northern China to evaluate reforestation effects on water yield. One paper was recently accepted by Journal of American Water Resources Association. In general, I am happy with the software. A few improvements may help the researchers in studying climate change and landuse effects. More training classes using real examples are needed for users.

The staff at DHI are very helpful and prompt in responding to my request in renewing licenses annually.”

Prof. Ge Sun, North Carolina State University, NC

“Torben was very helpful during our in-house training.  He got us to a point in four days that would have probably taken us four weeks to reach without his assistance. “

Jeremy George, Costello, Inc. Engineering and Surveying, San Antonio, TX

DHI User Conference, Luzern, Switzerland, 9 - 10 June 2008

From 9th to 10th of June we had the annual MIKE by DHI User Conference for the German Speaking Swiss clients in Luzern. We had a small group of 13 users attending the conference and 3 staff from DHI, one from DK and two from the Syke office, Germany. The main focus was on urban products and mainly on MOUSE, MIKE URBAN and SAMBA.

On the first day we concentrated on urban flood modelling using MIKE FLOOD. The current MIKE FLOODWATCH application for the Rhein river catchment in Switzerland was presented. The urban session focused on general questions about the future of MOUSE and MIKE NET as well as on new features of MIKE URBAN.

On the second day we focused on SAMBA and LTS. The use of SAMBA is very strong in Switzerland and the functionality and connectivity to MIKE URBAN was a key issue of discussion as well as the further development of SAMBA. In the second part of the day special features and utilities for MIKE URBAN including for example the AutoCAD functionality were presented

Some comments from the conference:

“The conference was a very useful place to exchange knowledge and information and build networks – also with the DHI staff.”

“The future needs for the urban sector concentrate increasingly on pollution transport and on integrated consideration of pollutant loads from sewers and their impact on the river and lake environment. It is good to know that the MIKE by DHI Software is able to handle this issue on top of the well known hydraulics.”

“A more permanent presence of DHI staff (in a Swiss DHI office) would help us as users in terms of customer care and support and in terms of increased presence in the Swiss market towards the Swiss authorities and municipalities.”

As a result we had two successful days and were able to exchange a lot of knowledge and got a real good feedback on software and clients’ needs on the Swiss market.
