The NetWork - A community newsletter for DHI Software users July 2007

Arc Marine: GIS for a Blue Planet

Beginning in 2001 a consortium of Marine GIS experts from various universities, government agencies and private industry joined together with ESRI to develop a data structure that could serve as an industry standard for storing coastal, near shore and deep sea data in a geodatabase, and supporting applications within each domain.  In 2002 Michael Blongewicz of DHI Water & Environment (DHI) joined the consortium and became the technical lead responsible for designing the database schema that is now being published under the title of Arc Marine:  GIS for a Blue Planet.

The Arc Marine data model provides users of ArcGIS a means by which they can manage and leverage their GIS datasets in an industry standard format, providing for easier start up, greater efficiency during implementation and interoperability between applications.  DHI’s interest in participating in this consortium focuses on their continuing goal of allowing users of DHI Software to better leverage their existing datasets.  DHI has extended Arc Marine with additional feature classes and data tables in order to accommodate DHI’s modelling needs.  This allows users building datasets within ArcGIS to more easily integrate their data with DHI Software.

ArcMarine screen shot

DHI’s Michael Blongewicz, second author and technical lead, assisted with the implementation of Arc Marine for several of the case studies that make up the contents of the book.  Dawn Wright, Oregon State University and project lead states, "DHI was a major asset to the outcome and success of this data model project. Indeed it could not have been completed without Michael’s experience and expertise in UML, and we also greatly anticipate the continued success of the related tool, MIKE Marine, throughout the coastal science and management communities."  DHI’s contribution to this book illustrates DHI’s broad capabilities that includes the understanding of shoreline, near shore and deep see hydraulics and the implementation of models in these areas, as well as the collecting and management of model data that might span several dimensions and time.  DHI’s MIKE Marine GIS software makes direct use of the extended Arc Marine data model and provides tools for users to import surveys, build transects, edit data values and view models results.

Modelling tips and hints ^
MIKE URBAN: Setting a classification ^

If you want to classify your input data, you can use one of the standard classification schemes, which are available by selecting “Statistics” from the right mouse pop-up menu on the top of any grid column in any editor e.g. the Pipe Editor. MIKE URBAN provides or create custom classes based on classes. This is very fast and easy way to query or check the input data for errors; if you classify pipes by the pipe diameter, the Classification dialog gives you minimum and maximum diameter, average diameter as well as the distribution of the pipe diameter over the pipe network.

ESRI San Diego

June 18-22, 2007 DHI participated in the 27th Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California, US. In the DHI exhibition booth we had some busy days giving us the pleasure of meeting numerous potential and existing users to demonstrate, explain, share ideas and exchange views of how to further develop our software. At the plenary and technical sessions it was very useful to listen to where development of ESRI technology will take us in the future. Amongst the many interesting sessions on GIS applications was the presentation the City of Los Angeles gave on how they have used the GIS capabilities of MIKE Urban to efficiently build, check, calibrate and troubleshoot a hydraulic model of the sewer network in LA.

On a more technical level we were also confirmed that the direction DHI has taken with our developments for version 2008 is right. For instance it was promising to get confirmation for the performance improvements associated to using the File Geodatabase (GDB) in ArcGIS 9.2 as opposed to the Personal Getdatabase (MDB). Correspondingly MIKE Urban and DHI GIS Extensions version 2008 will support the use of both GDB and MDB. We also noticed an increasing interest in modelling temporal data in GIS. DHI’s Temporal Analyst fills in the void between spatial (traditional GIS domain) and temporal modelling (DHI domain).

Once again we have been assured that the close integration between DHI Software products and GIS is highly appreciated for obvious reasons: Data stored and managed in GIS are often useful, if not mandatory, as input data for water modelling and likewise GIS based visualisations and analyses of the results of water modelling is often very beneficial. Both directions of interoperability are significantly improving the usability and user efficiency of our software.

Professional training courses: ^

Increased focus on training and capacity building
- DHI Software courses around the globe!

Training

For a number of years DHI and our national and regional offices have offered a variety of courses worldwide within water and environment.

In recent years we have intensified our training and capacity building activities as we believe that skills development is a key component and cornerstone in our mission to contribute to the sustainable development of water bodies worldwide and the development of more socially and environmentally sustainable water management strategies and global partnerships.

Our courses range from short, intensive standard software and vocational training courses to dedicated, specialised training matching our clients' specific and individual needs and requests.

Our short, intensive standard software courses - based upon the “learning-by doing principle” including hands-on exercises and guided by our highly experienced trainers and modellers - offer our global user community a valuable opportunity to obtain – or update - in-depth knowledge of our software in a quick, efficient and cost-effective way.

Training

In recent years DHI has experienced a significant growth in the number of users – experienced, new and potential - attending our short public standard courses:  governmental agencies, regional and local water bodies, research institutions and universities, professional bodies and engineering companies, urban water utilities, coastal and harbour authorities. Alone in 2006 more than 150 standard software courses were held internationally.
