Simulation time now significantly reduced for MIKE 3/21
In the 2008 release the MIKE 3/21 FM systems have been adapted for parallel processing, achieving an unprecedented performance improvement. The parallelization is based on the shared memory OpenMP approach, well suited for multiprocessor and multi-core Windows based workstations. Combined with a general optimization of memory access this provides performance improvements of up to 8 times through put time relative to Release 2008 on a dual quad-core CPU using MIKE 3/21 HD FM.
The table shows an example of the speed-up factors for MIKE 3/21 HD FM

The parallelization is basically effective for all MIKE 3/21 FM modules including the spectral wave model MIKE 21 SW. Thus the performance improvement significantly increases the possibility to use the flexible mesh technology. The actual performance improvement is dependent on the model set-up and combination of modules selected and of course the configuration of the workstation.
Several projects at DHI have already benefited from the performance improvements. One example is shown below. The figure shows the mesh for a coastal model in the Mediterranean Sea comprising 15000 3D elements. Simulations comprised HD and decoupled AD for a total of 2 weeks real-time. The simulation times for the Release 2007 were 12 days for the flow model and 34 hours for the multi component AD simulation. For the Release 2008 version the figures were 1.5 day and 4.5 hour respectively, thus providing a significant reduction in project production times.

During 2007, DHI a.s. executed the EUROPAID project “Supply of diagnostic and modelling tools, training and services for 13 regional water companies in Bulgaria” (ref.No. EUROPEAID/121561/D/S/BG) financed by the the European Communities for Environment in accordance with the provision of the Financing Memorandum for ISPA measure 2003/BG/16/P/PA/004.

RWC beneficiaries in Bulgaria
The contract comprised the supply of modelling tools for water and wastewater and diagnostic equipment as well as training for 13 Bulgarian water utility companies. These target beneficiaries included Plovdiv, Vidin, Vratza, Veliko Tarnovo, Burgas, Sliven, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Dobric, Rouse, Yambol, Gabrovo and Perník regional water companies.
DHI a.s leading the consortium “DHI Water” along with SEBA Dynatronic Gmbh was granted the contract of 1,7 million Euro for the delivery of IT hardware (comprising of 13 plotters, 24 PCs, 26 laptops, 74 printers), diagnostic equipment (comprising 27 sewer flow-meters, 42 ultrasonic flow-meters, 13 listening sticks, 13 noise loggers for leak detection, 15 acusto-correlators, 20 pipe and cable locators, 27 portable sewage samplers), modelling software for water and waste water systems (comprising 13 MIKE URBAN CS - collection system licenses, 11 MIKE URBAN WD - distribution system licenses) as well as substantial training on modelling with MIKE URBAN and on usage of diagnostic equipment.
As contracting authority on Bulgarian side the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water was coordinated the project activities and acted as the final client during the project execution. The project started in February 2007 and was successfully completed in September 2007.

MIKE URBAN WD training
During the 8 months project execution the basic hardware and MIKE URBAN software was delivered, installed and tested. Diagnostic tools were delivered and local RWC staff got trained during a number of short training courses.
The training on MIKE URBAN 2007 software usage was structured into two subsequent phases with a total of 14 man-months of training time in Bulgaria. The first two-week course was focussed mostly on modelling background and theory while the training during the second phase a four-week course addressed the practical aspects of model schematization, model building, calibration and usage. At the end of the training, each RWC trainee started building water and sewerage models based on their own network data. In total, 48 local specialists from regional water utilities got trained on MIKE URBAN software modelling by DHI a.s. instructors.
The project was executed in close cooperation by DHI a.s. with partners from other DHI offices including DHI Bulgaria and DHI Slovakia and also with substantial logistic and organisational support from DHI Bulgaria.
At present, DHI a.s. is involved in two similar projects where delivery and training on MIKE URBAN software package for next 6 Bulgarian regional water utilities is to be accomplished.

Profile plots are very useful for reviewing simulation results as well as for checking the pipeline elevation data for errors. Display of minimum and maximum values during the simulation period is of great importance when analyzing unsteady flow conditions of the network.
MIKE URBAN Profile Plot allows you to define and display any number of result items, such as flows, pressures, water quality including their minimum and maximum values.
 Illustration: In order to display minimum and maximum values, select the result item several times and change its type to ”Minimum” and “Maximum”, while “Not-filled Animated” type represents the default type of display.
 Illustration: Profile plot with pipe elevation (light blue), actual hydraulic grade line (dark blue) and the envelope of minimum (green) and maximum (red) values. These results represent a water hammer simulation of a pump failure as you can see from the sudden change in the hydraulic grade line between nodes 45 an 49.

“We have used MOUSE/MIKE URBAN extensively for the past four years and it is our first choice in modelling software. We have found it to be robust, industrial grade software that cannot be broken; both flexible and easy to use. Technical support has been outstanding. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is serious about modelling urban drainage systems”
Larry Bodnaruk, P.Eng. Senior Water Resource Engineer Associated Engineering Alberta Ltd.
“I have been working on DHI MOUSE and MIKE URBAN since 2002. It is amazing software, especially, when dealing with RTC module. Other features are also great too. When I started working on DHI software, at that time we had only one license and now we have three licenses because more client are switching to MOUSE/MIKE URBAN. Keep it up guys, great job”
Mohammad Tariq, M.Eng., P.Eng., Senior Water Resources Engineer, ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd
"My experience using DHI software and your support team has always been a very positive one. Having used in-house numerical modelling codes before with limited user interface, I really appreciate the user-friendliness of the DHI software suite. It is clear that these tools have been developed to help maximize the time spent on interpreting the modelled processes as opposed to how the run the software and correct bugs. The documentation is excellent, as well as the support team."
MIKE 3 user, Nova Scotia, Canada
“Mike Zero and MIKE21 were instrumental in the design, development and testing of the artificial reef. The interface was a pleasure to deal with, the pre and post processing excellent. And of course the quality of the code, along with the ease with which any parameter value can be changed is second to none. Since the completion of the study, I received the 2007 version of the software, and was absolutely thrilled with the upgrades! They have made a great experience even greater!
I remain a die-hard fan of MIKE21 (and DHI), and look forward to the next project (which cannot come soon enough!)”
Dr. Alfredo Torruella, Caribbean Oceanography Group
“Compared to other available public and proprietary models, the DHI models are very well documented, computationally more efficient, numerically more accurate and best of all easier to use. For instance, each DHI product comes with comprehensive scientific manuals that describe in detail the mathematical formulations and the numerical algorithms used by each model, and user manuals and references with step by step guides that include several project examples and illustrations. Moreover the training and the professional technical support offered by DHI offices worldwide makes DHI software the best modelling system and the tool of choice for consulting engineers”
Samir Hamdi, M.Sc., M.A.Sc., Ph.D. Senior Project Director GENIVAR, Canada |

Strong focus on software courses worldwide in 2007
Almost 2.000 experienced, new and potential users chose to attend our MIKE software courses worldwide in 2007! The large number of participants can to a great extent be attributed to the significant efforts that have been put into developing training, capacity building and skills development as key components in the activities in recent years.
The trainees came from governmental agencies, regional and local water bodies, research institutions and universities, professional bodies and engineering companies, urban water utilities, coastal and harbour authorities throughout the world.
The participants' main reasons for attending the courses were:
- quick and efficient mastering of the software and accordingly project work; cost-effectiveness;
- upgrading of company teams' productivity, modelling skills and expertise;
- significant interest in coupling of models and products and mastering 1D & 2D integrated modelling;
- in-depth knowledge of products before final purchase.
For further information:
All existing, new and potential users are always welcome to contact us and to have a talk with our trainers. They are all highly experienced DHI modellers, who will discuss and advise you which training scheme will meet your specific needs and preferences most efficiently.
A good starting point will also be to consult our Global Course Calendar 2008:
www.dhigroup.com/Software/Training.
It will always tell you when, where and in which products the DHI office in your country has scheduled public enrolment courses - in your language and in your region!
