Nakskov Fiord, Denmark, modelled with MIKE 3 Flexible Mesh
A recent example of a MIKE 3 Flexible Mesh application made by DHI was a study of the hydrographics and water quality in Nakskov Fiord, Denmark.
Nakskov Fiord is a long and shallow bay stretching from Langeland Baelt in the west to the town of Nakskov in the east. The bay covers an area of approximately 90 km2 and the mean depth is only around 2m. The bay is an important habitat for birds and is also widely used as a recreational area.
The 9 km long navigational channel connects the port of Nakskov with the deep water in Langeland Baelt. The channel today is 6.3 m deep but only 40 m wide. The Port of Nakskov expects to be called by larger vessels in the future, partly due to increased demand for giant sized wind power plant wings from the local factory and partly due to the future construction of a fixed link to Germany from Roedby located nearby.
DHI was commissioned after a public tender to study the hydrodynamic impact and sediment dispersion from deepening the existing channel to -8.5 m. This will include dredging and disposal in Langeland Baelt of more than 5 mio. m3 glacial till from the sea bed.
DHI used the MIKE 3 Flow Model (Flexible Mesh), HD and MT modules to study the complex hydrographics in the bay and to model the transport and accumulation of sediment spilled in the water during dredging and disposal.
One of the advantages with the flexible mesh version is that it provides an optimal degree of flexibility in the representation of complex geometries and enables smooth representations of boundaries.
The model results showed a significant effect of spilled sediment which must be mitigated before the project can be approved, whereas the impact on the hydrographics in the bay is expected to be very limited and without any impact on the flora and fauna.

MIKE URBAN Water Distribution Model of Dhaka in Bangladesh
The detailed model of the water distribution system of Dhaka was developed and calibrated at macro-level. The work was done by IWM Institute of Water Modelling with support from DHI Water & Environment. The water supply system of Dhaka supplies water to more than 5.5 million inhabitants. The whole system consists of app. 400 ground water tube wells and 3 surface water sources covering an area of more than 200 km2. The flow capacity of produced water exceeds 25m3/s. The hydraulic model consists of app. 30,000 pipes and it was developed by digitizing the data from paper maps. Node demands were developed based on the population estimates; leakage and unaccounted for water were also taken into account. The calibration campaign was conducted in order to collect the measured flows and pressures at selected locations. The mathematical model of the water supply system was macro-calibrated and verified for both steady state and simulations of extended period. Several hydraulic scenarios were conducted including a dedicated modification of the EPANET algorithm allowing for modelling of low pressurised conditions. This proved to be a necessary requirement for accurate modelling of the flow and pressures in the network. The main objective in developing the detailed water distribution model was to provide backgrounds for the further systematic network rehabilitation and improvement towards continuous water supply during 24 hours.

Linking professional drawing tools with hydraulic modelling tools
AQUATERRA is a software suite which makes it possible to link data from the AutoCAD drawing and planning tools with state-of-the-art hydraulic modelling tools such as MIKE 11.
The interface exports the geometric data (stations and geometry of the cross sections, channel banks and leve) from Aquaterra to the MIKE 11 cross section file after which the modelling can take place. Similar result files may be imported back again via Aquaterra, e.g. water levels, cross sections, longituidnal section bank and levee positions. This very efficient transfer of data greatly assists in the design work as the data exchange aids in the planning and modelling, i.e. information is used much more efficiently.
Aquaterra is developed by CGS. Further information may be found here: www.aquaterra-software.com |

MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 Flexible Mesh
More extensive descriptions of the Flexible Mesh versions of MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 are now available for download.
The Flexible Mesh series includes the following:
Flow Model FM modules:
- Hydrodynamic Module, HD
- Advection-Dispersion Module, TR
- Ecology and water quality Module, ECO Lab
- Sand Transport Module, ST
- Mud Transport Module, MT
+ Coupled Model FM
Wave module:
The FM Series meets the increasing demand for realistic representations of nature, both with regard to ‘look alike’ and to its capability to model coupled processes, e.g. coupling between currents, waves and sediments. Coupling of modules is managed in the Coupled Model FM.
All modules are supported by new and advanced user interfaces including efficient and sophisticated tools for mesh generation, data management, 2D/3D visualization, etc. In combination with comprehensive documentation and support, the new FM series forms a unique professional software tool for consultancy services related to design, operation and maintenance tasks within oceanographic, coastal and estuarine environments. However, being a general modelling system for 2D and 3D free-surface flows it may also be applied for studies of inland surface waters, e.g. overland flooding and lakes or reservoirs.

MIKE URBAN - Flexible units
MIKE URBAN is extremely flexible in the way how project units are defined and customized. It is possible not only to select one of the many predefined unit environments (such as English units with gallons per minute, SI units with litres per second etc.) but it is also possible to select a specific unit for any attribute for any input table including the results. In order to change the pipe diameter from [meters] to [centimetres] select Tools | Custom Units from the main menu. Select msm_link from the list of tables and choose the unit for "diameter" and select OK. This will change the pipe diameter units for MOUSE pipes. In order to do the similar change for EPANET pipes, select mw_pipe table and define the units. |

MIKE URBAN - Flow tracing
Flow tracing provides you with an excellent understanding of the flow conditions in complex networks. This tool, which is available in both Collection Systems (CS) and Water Distribution (WD) modes of MIKE URBAN, can trace the flow path to (or from) multiple selected nodes. In order to perform the flow tracing, flag node(s) using the flag tool from the Profile & Tracing toolbar and select Backward or Forward tracing. The threshold value allows you to specify what the limit for minimum flow is. The results of the flow tracing are displayed on the Map.
Illustration: Backward flow tracing is displayed on the Map for the selected 2 nodes.

Another successful MIKE 21 Training course A MIKE 21 training course held recently at the National Technical University of Athens NTUA, Greece included training in hydrodynamic, wave and sediment transport modelling. The goal was to learn how to use MIKE 21 HD, NSW, EMS and ST modules and how to combine and apply these in realistic cases.
The following is quoted from an email sent to our training course responsible: "On behalf of all, Thank you very much for the efficient training and your patience! You are a very good "teacher".
