The will to win

Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen, skipper on one of the two Danish match race teams – and an experienced MIKE 21 user - attending this year’s women’s world championship in Auckland, NZ, is clear in her perception of the key to success. It’s the teamwork that counts. Each member’s capability to maintain focus under extreme pressure is crucial. Also the ability to adjust role functions due to changes in conditions is important. Stay calm - don’t panic.

Soft tools used for improving the knowledge of local conditions: apples and models. Apples are used to track the flow on the matchrace course, especially around the marks. Computer models can be used to provide a more complete picture of the prevailing conditions and how they change. That is why MIKE 21/3 predictions are part of the preparations.

‘Sometimes my boat mates think I’m a nerd, when I start to explain or make reflections about the different processes we observe in nature. On the other hand they can see the usefulness in drawing these. We all have different professions and each is bringing in knowledge and experience that is useful. Working with the MIKE 21 model over the years has also contributed to a better understanding of local wave and current conditions’ says Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen.

MIKE URBAN: How to register raster image e.g. JPEF, TIFF so that it can be displayed as a background image on the map ^

MIKE URBAN does not provide direct build-in tool for registering raster images by defining 3 or more reference points with known X and Y coordinates. In order to do this, it is necessary to use ArcMap and follow these steps:

  1. Open empty map in ArcMap and use “Add data” tool to select the raster image. Select “Zoom to full extent” in case that the raster map does not display

raster image is loaded into ArcMap
Illustration: Step1 – raster image is loaded into ArcMap

  1. Select View | Toolbars and select “Georeferencing” from the main ArcMap menu

Georeferencing toolbar
Illustration: Georeferencing toolbar

  1. Add the control points. The control points are used to build a polynomial transformation that will convert the raster dataset from its existing location to the spatially correct location. Repeat the steps below them for specifying at least 3 control points:
    1. Click the Add Control Points tool.
    2. Click the mouse over the known location in the unreferenced image to add the first coordinate in the link.
    3. Right-click the image and click Input X and Y. Enter the reference coordinates on the Enter Coordinates dialog box.
    4. Click OK.

Enter the reference coordinates on the Enter Coordinates dialog box
Illustration: Enter the reference coordinates on the Enter Coordinates dialog box

  1. Click Georeferencing and click Update Georeferencing to save the transformation information with the raster dataset. This creates a new file with the same name as the raster dataset but with an .aux file extension
  2. Now, you can add this raster image into MIKE URBAN and the world file .aux will automatically be used to position the image within your project.

Hampton Roads Sanitation District (Virginia, USA) select MIKE URBAN for Regional Wet Weather Management Plan ^

Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) owns and operates an interceptor sewer system consisting of both gravity and force mains, and nine sewage treatment plants (STPs) servicing the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. The regional system covers an area of 2,000 square miles, serves a population of over 1.6 million, and conveys and treats an average of more than 165 million gallons of sewage each day.

Due to a combination of aging infrastructure and a continually growing population HRSD and the localities have entered into a State Order by Consent (Consent Order) to evaluate the existing collection and conveyance systems and to develop a Regional Wet Weather Management Plan to minimize sanitary sewer overflows. In order to do so modelling is required.

MIKE URBAN met all of the technical requirements in terms of simulation processes and system performance, particularly with respect to the way it handles combined gravity main and force main systems with complex real-time operation of pumps and valves for controlling inflow rates and pressures. These were key considerations because these are the key processes influencing the behavior and responses of the HRSD system.

3rd MIKE by DHI User Group Meeting in Denmark, 2- 3 April 2008.

The third Danish MIKE User Group Meeting was recently held in the beautiful surroundings at Rungstedgaard, which is situated close to the coastline of Øresund. The meeting attracted more than 75 users from various parts of the water sector in Denmark.

Presentations were given both by the users and by DHI staff from Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

On the second day, which had two parallel tracks - urban and water resources, a substantial number of users attended the activities. Each track consisted of a combination of News & Views (with active discussions) and a detailed walk-through on how to use the various features (among these some of the interesting new 2008 features).

Training ^

DHI Software training

Strong focus on software courses worldwide in 2007

Almost 2.000 experienced, new and potential users chose to attend our MIKE software courses worldwide in 2007! The large number of participants can to a great extent be attributed to the significant efforts that have been put into developing training, capacity building and skills development as key components in the activities in recent years.

The trainees came from governmental agencies, regional and local water bodies, research institutions and universities, professional bodies and engineering companies, urban water utilities, coastal and harbour authorities throughout the world.

The participants' main reasons for attending the courses were:

  • quick and efficient mastering of the software and accordingly project work; cost-effectiveness;
  • upgrading of company teams' productivity, modelling skills and expertise;
  • significant interest in coupling of models and products and mastering 1D & 2D integrated modelling;
  • in-depth knowledge of products before final purchase.

For further information:

All existing, new and potential users are always welcome to contact us and to have a talk with our trainers. They are all highly experienced DHI modellers, who will discuss and advise you which training scheme will meet your specific needs and preferences most efficiently.

A good starting point will also be to consult our Global Course Calendar 2008:

www.dhigroup.com/Software/Training.

It will always tell you when, where and in which products the DHI office in your country has scheduled public enrolment courses - in your language and in your region!
