Forecasting and Hindcasting

DHI has been running operational forecast models of the water environment since 2001, and today these services have a worldwide coverage and provide information on not only water levels, waves and currents, but also water quality parameters and other environmental indicators.

An important aspect of forecasting is monitoring the quality of the forecast and ensuring that the basis of the forecast – yesterday’s condition – is the best it can be.

The combination of models that are continuously quality controlled, daily reports to authorities on the performance of the models and continuous verification means that the combination of yesterdays into a long historic record provides a very accurate tool for accessing the conditions in the the region.

The present operational South East Asia specific suite of models includes the South China Sea for waves; 3D currents and water levels are presently in development. Interfaces are already available for oil spill (or other accidental spill) modeling and the flexible back-end allows tailor made dissemination to users online or via emails, mms, or text messaging.
