In many of the tropical countries in Asia, rapid development in the coastal
zone is often in conflict with the rich and diverse ecological systems
found in the region, including mangrove, seagrass and coral habitats.
With increased awareness of the value inherent in these ecological
communities, the study and assessment of these habitats often form a
crucial component of environmental impact studies and monitoring programmes
for coastal development projects.
DHI has been involved in a number of such studies, and has recently
performed extensive surveys and habitat mapping as part of the Sabah
Shoreline Managemant Plan project. DHI has thus accumulated the experience
and technical skills required to conduct efficient and reliable studies in
these underwater and intertidal environments.
