The container port development in Sapangar Bay, Sabah, Malaysia, involves
landfill reclamation in close proximity to coral reef, seagrass and
mangrove habitats and existing port facilities. DHI has completed an
environmental impact study for the marine components of a full detailed
EIA, including field surveys of currents, water levels and bathymetry,
marine and mangrove habitats. Numerical modelling of coastal hydraulics,
water quality and suspended sediment plumes was also performed using
DHI's MIKE 21 modelling system.
DHI's Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM) analysis package was used
as a transparent method for assessing and comparing the various
multi-sectoral impacts on the environment. Mitigation measures were also
formulated for potentially significant impacts, including the
specifications for the environmental monitoring and management plan, which
has subsequently entered the implemenation phase, becoming the first full
feedback monitoring plan in Malaysia.
