Coastal Erosion Control
Coastal erosion control is a core business area of DHI in Southeast Asia.
Services include not only design and performance testing of coastal erosion
protection, but also more fundamental studies on the causes of coastal
erosion, enabling technically advanced solutions to be identified and
tested using a combination of advanced numerical tools and GIS.
In recent years DHI's services have expanded to include coastal erosion
management through the development and supply of decision support systems
(DSS). A comprehensive coastal defence DSS was installed by DHI at Kertih
Port in 1999 and subsequent installations have been made, amongst others,
with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia.
Dredging and Reclamation
DHI has an extensive background in consultancy services for dredging and
reclamation projects, including hydraulic design optimisation, sand
sourcing, environmental impact assessment and environmental management.
The increasing concern about environmental impact of dredging and
reclamation operations has emphasised the need for comprehensive assessment
of both short term and long term effects. The short term effects arise
largely from the impacts from sediment spill from the dredging and fill
operations on the aquatic environment. The long term impacts may arise from
changes in wave and tidal circulation patterns and coastal zone dynamics
which may result in morphological and water quality impacts.
DHI has developed a range of numerical modelling tools, field survey
techniques and management methods that have been effectively used on major
reclamation projects in the region.
